UVA Mormon Studies Fellow Reilly Brady Publishes Undergraduate Research on Latter-day Saint Gender-Based Violence

American Religions Ph.D. student and UVA Mormon Studies Fellow Reilly Brady published her undergraduate research in the Journal of the Mormon Social Science Association last year. Titled “‘Guard Your Virtue with Your Life’: Current and Former Latter-day Saint Women’s Experiences with Purity Teachings and Gender-Based Violence,” Brady’s article sought to widen the study of purity culture and its impacts on specifically Latter-day Saint women. Her research, compiled during her B.A. in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Washington in St. Louis, includes historical discourse analysis, surveying, and 19 semi-structured interviews with current and former Latter-day Saint women.

Brady plans to continue her study of Latter-day Saint sexual purity expectations and gender-based violence while at UVA, with a particular focus on the involvement of Mormon women in purity movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. She also hopes to continue including the voices of current and former Latter-day Saint women in her research.
