Call for Applicants – The Maxwell Institute

Consultation on Latter-day Saint Women in Comparative Perspective

This three-year consultation will bring together a cohort of approximately twelve scholars with interests in gaining an in-depth understanding of the history and contemporary status of Latter-day Saint women in comparative perspective. Participants will gain and share critical tools for research, share drafts of work, and propose further avenues for future analysis.

Our focus will be global and comprehensive, open to studies of women and women’s roles both within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in related traditions. By meeting together in three annual sessions, our aim is to build networks of scholars that will both further ongoing research and encourage creative and dynamic new scholarship. We will introduce participants to senior scholars to discuss work in progress and also form smaller accountability groups for periodic check-ins throughout consultation.

The seminar will be led by Kate Holbrook (Church History Department) and Laurie Maffly-Kipp (John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics; Neal A. Maxwell Institute).

Format

The consultation consists of three sessions of approximately one week each in the summers of 2019, 2020, and 2021. Each gathering will feature guest scholars, the sharing of research, and exploration of archival and other source materials in Provo and Salt Lake City. Travel arrangements, housing, and a $1000 stipend per session will be provided for admitted participants.

During the summer of 2019 we will meet in Provo from June 23 to June 29, including a culminating public conference with invited guests.

We welcome applications from a variety of academic disciplines, cultural backgrounds, and geographic locations. Graduate students, faculty, independent and alt-ac scholars are all welcome to apply.
