The Early Mormon Marriage Database

Use the form below to search the Early Mormon Marriage Database. Please enter at least one field to retrieve results.

UVA’s Early Mormon Marriage Database contains quantitative data to promote the analysis of the social dynamics of plural marriage among the first generation of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints between 1840 and 1852. These dates mark the beginning of the private, social practice of plural marriage within the Church and its public announcement to the world at large.

The database is composed of life and marriage information on approximately 36,000 individuals. The present state of our data indicates that by 1852 approximately 500 plural families had been organized from among this population. While the above search panel allows access to the life and marriage data of all individuals in our database, the links below lead to the identification and tabulation of the spouses in all plural marriages by gender and date. Each name on these lists is linked to a person record within the database.

Please note the information for each participant may not be complete. We will be continually updating and refining our data and providing additional analyses on this site to better understand the discursive and social structures of early Mormon marriage.
