Inside the Classroom: Special Panel on LDS Women and Church Callings

In Fall 2024, a group of local leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints visited Dr. Maffly-Kipp’s undergraduate seminar, Mormonism and American Culture, for a special panel on LDS Women.

Students prepared for the panel by exploring historical readings, such as a history of the fifth Relief Society president, Emmeline B. Wells. They also delved into more contemporary church issues as explored in the work of Julie Beck, as well as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’s 1995 address, “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”

The panelists discussed the readings and talked about their own callings and responsibilities in the church. Students had many questions which made for a lively, rich discussion.
