Panel: Women’s Ordination in Catholicism and Mormonism

February 11, 2017, 7:00 PM - HSSB 6020, University of California - Santa Barbara

Prof. Flake will participate in a dialogue comparing ordination theology and practice in the priesthoods of the Latter-day Saint and Catholic tradition. The event is sponsored by the Virgil Cordano, OFM, Endowment in Catholic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies, UCSB.

The conversation will be repeated for the public in the evening at 7 p.m.

Facilitated by Cardono Chair Ann Taves, the dialogue will focus on the meaning of ordination, priesthood, and gender in the history of the Roman Catholic and Latter-day Saints traditions and the implications of this history for those looking to expand the role of women. Professors Ann Taves and David Walker will offer responses that link the presentations to their courses on “Comparing Religions” and “American Religion,” followed by discussion with the audience.

Dr. Gary Macy is the John Nobili, S.J. Professor of Theology at the University of Santa Clara, and author of numerous books including The Hidden History of the Ordination of Women: Female Clergy in the Medieval West (2007) and co-author (with Phyllis Zagano and William Ditewig) of Women Deacons: Past, Present and Future (2012).
