TEMPLES, 1839.

1839:  20 Mar.:  Joseph cautions against “secret societies.”

“And again I would further sejest the impropriety of the organization of bands or companies by covenant or oaths by penalties or secrecies but let the time past of our pxperiance and suferings by the wickedness of Doctor Avard suffise and let our covenant be that of the everlasting covenant as is contained in the Holy writ. and the things that god hath revealed unto us.  Pure friendship always becomes weakened the verry moment you undertake to make it stronger by penal oaths and secrecy.  Your humble servant or servants intend from hence forth to disapprobate every thing that is not in accordance with the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and is not of a bold and frank and an upright nature they will not hold their peace as in times past when they see iniquity begining to rear its head for fear of traitors or the concequinces that shall flow by reproving those who creap in unawairs that they may get something to destroy the flock.”  (Joseph Smith, writing from Liberty Jail to the “church . . . scattered aborad and to Bishop Partridge in particular,” 20 Mar., 1839.  In Jessee, Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, pp. 405-406)  [See a slightly revised version in Times and Seasons 1(9):133, July, 1840.]

22 Mar.:  Sealing power given to Peter anciently.

“Now I want you to consider the high standing of Peter; he was now being endowed with power from on high and held the keys of the kingdom of heaven.  Mathew 16th chap. 19th verse, [‘]and I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’  This was the character, Sir, that made the glorious promise of the gift of the Holy Ghost, predicated upon the baptism for the remission of sins: and he did not say that it was confined to that generation, but see further: Act 2nd chap. 39th verse.  ‘for the promise is unto you, and your children, and to all who are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.’  Then, Sir, if the callings of God extend unto us, we come within the perview of Peter’s promise.  Now where is the man who is authorized to put his finger on the spot and say, thus far shalt thou go and no farther: there is no man.  Therefore let us receive the whole, or none.”  (Joseph Smith to Isaac Galland, 22 Mar., 1839.  In Jessee, Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, p. 422)

26 Apr.:  Laying of cornerstones for Far West Temple.

“At a conference held at Far West by the Twelve, High Priests, Elders, and Priests, on the 26th day of April, 1839 . . .

The council then proceeded to the building spot of the Lord’s House; when the following business was transacted:  Part of a hymn was sung, on the mission of the Twelve.

Elder Alpheus Cutler, the master workman of the house, then recommenced laying the foundation of the Lord’s House, agreeably to revelation, by rolling up a large stone near the southeast corner.

The following of the Twelve were present:  Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt, John E. Page, and John Taylor, who proceeded to ordain Wilford Woodruff, and George A. Smith, (who had been previously nominated by the First Presidency, accepted by the Twelve, and acknowledged by the Church), to the office of Apostles and members of the quorum of the Twelve, to fill the places of those who are fallen.  Darwin Chase and Norman Shearer (who had just been liberated from the Richmond prison, where they had been confined for the cause of Jesus Christ) were then ordained to the office of the Seventies.

The Twelve then offered up vocal prayer in the following order:  Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Orson Pratt, John E. Page, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and George A. Smith.  After which we sung Adam-ondi-Ahman, and then the Twelve took their leave of the following Saints, agreeable to the revelation, viz.:  . . .

Elder Alpheus Cutler then placed the stone before alluded to in its regular position, after which, in consequence of the peculiar situation of the Saints, he thought it wisdom to adjourn until some future time, when the Lord shall open the way; expressing his determination then to proceed with the building; whereupon the conference adjourned.”  (HC 3:336-339)

27 Jun.:  The Doctrine of Election.

“St. Paul exhorts us to make our Calling & Election shure.  This is that sealing power spoken of by Paul in other places (See Eph I. 13.14.  In whom ye also trusted, that after ye heard the work of truth; the gospel of your salvation, in whom also after that ye believed ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.  Which is the earnest of our inheritance, until the redemption of the purchased possession unto the praise of his glory.)  That we may be sealed up unto the day of redemption, this principle ought.  (in its proper place) to be taught, for God hath not revealed any thing to Joseph, but what he will make known unto the Twelve & even the least Saint may know all things as fast as he is able to–bear them.  for the day must come when no man need say to his neighbor know ye the Lord for all shall know him (who Remain) from the least to the greatest, How is this to be done?  It is to be done by this sealing power & the other comforter spoken of which will be manifest by Revelation.  There is two Comforters spoken of is the the Holy Ghost the same as given on the day of pentecost and that all Saints receive after faith.  Repentance & Baptism.  This first comforter or Holy Ghost has no other effect than pure inteligence.  It is more powerful in expanding the mind enlightening the understanding & storeing the intellect with present knowledge of a man who is of the literal Seed of Abraham than one that is a gentile though it may not have half as much visible effect upon the body for as the Holy Ghost falls upon one of the Literal Seed of Abraham it is calm & serene & his whole soul & body are only exercised by the pure spirit of Inteligence; while the effect of the Holy Ghost upon a Gentile is to purge out the old blood & make him actually of the seed of Abraham.  That man that has none of the blood of Abraham (naturally) must have a new creation by the Holy Ghost, in such a case there may be more of a powerful effect upon the body & visible to the eye than upon an Israelite, while the Israelite at first might be far before the Gentile in pure inteligence

The other Comforter spoken of is a subject of great interest & perhaps understood by few of this generation, After a person hath faith in Christ, repents of his sins & is Baptized for the remission of his sins & received the Holy Ghost (by the laying on of hands) which is the first Comforter then let him continue to humble himself before God, hungering & thirsting after Righteousness. & living by every word of God & the Lord will soon say unto him Son thou shalt be exalted.  &c When the Lord has thoroughly proved him & finds that the man is determined to serve him at all hazard. then the man will find his calling & Election made sure then it will be his privilege to receive the other Comforter which the Lord hath promised the saints as is recorded in the testimony of St John in the XIV ch from the 12th to the 27 verses Note the 16.17.18.21.23. verses.  (16. vs) & I will pray the father & he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; (17) Even the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you & shall be in you.  (18) I will not leave you comfortless.  I will come to you (21) He that hath my commandments & keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. & he that loveth me shall be loved of my father. & I will love him & will manifest myself to him (23) If a man Love me he will keep my words. & my Father will love him. & we will come unto him, & make our abode with him.

Now what is this other Comforter?  It is no more or less than the Lord Jesus Christ himself & this is the sum & substance of the whole matter, that when any man obtains this last Comforter he will have the personage of Jesus Christ to attend him or appear unto him from time to time. & even he will manifest the Father unto him & they will take up their abode with him, & the visions of the heavens will be opened unto him & the Lord will teach him face to face & he may have a perfect knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God, & this is the state & place the Ancient Saints arrived at when they had such glorious vision Isaiah, Ezekiel, John upon the Isle of Patmos, St Paul in the third heavens, & all the Saints who held communion with the general Assembly & Church of the First Born &c.  (Joseph Smith, 27 Jun., 1839.  In Words of JS pp. 4-5)

25 Jul.:  Both in time and in eternity.

“I am as ever your most true and faithful earthly friend both in time and in Eternity.”  (Don Carlos Smith to his wife, Agnes M. Smith, 25 Jul., 1839; Lucy Mack Smith manuscript, p. 217)

ca. 8 Aug.:  Spirit of Elijah

“The hearts of the children will have to be turned to the fathers, & the fathers to the children living or dead to prepare them for the coming of the Son of Man.  If Elijah did not come the whole earth would be smitten.”  (Joseph Smith, ca. 8 Aug., 1839.  In Words of JS, p. 11)

ca. 8 Aug.:  “Seal you up to Eternal life.”

“There is one Comforter [i.e. the Holy Ghost] & another Comforter to abide with you forever, reach to things within the vail, know that you are Sealed.  If you get it, it will stand by you forever.  How is it obtained?  Keep my commandments & I will pray &c.–It is a privilege to view the Son of Man himself, he dwelleth with you & shall be in you, his spirit shall be in you.  I will not have you comfortless, I will come to you, abide with you forever, Seal you up to Eternal life.  Yet a little while & you shall see me no more, but ye see me.–He that hath my commandments & keepeth them, he it is that loveth me &c.–I will manifest myself to him.  if he does not he has not told the truth.  I will put promises in your hearts, that will not leave you that will Seal you up. . . .

God is not a respecter of persons, we all have the same privilege.  Come to God weary him until he blesses you &c–we are entitled to the same blessings, Jesus, revelations, Just Men &–Angels &c. &c. not Laying again the doctrine of Christ go on unto perfection.  Obtain that holy Spirit of promise–Then you can be sealed to Eternal Life.”  (Joseph Smith, ca. 8 Aug., 1839.  In Words of JS, p. 14)

17 Nov.:  Anointings.

“I preached in the forenoon, brother Taylor in the afternoon.  In the evening I anointed brother Taylor in the house of the Lord.  He had previously washed himself in pure water with castile soap; then we all went to the Temple.  Brother Kimball opened the meeting by prayer; I then anointed brother Taylor with pure sweet oil, and pronounced such blessings as the Spirit gave utterance.  Brother Taylor then arose and prayed for himself.  Brother Turley, one of the Seventies, was anointed by D. S. Miles, one of the Presidents of Seventies which was sealed by loud shouts of hosannah; then their feet were washed and the meeting closed.”  (Manuscript History of Brigham Young [Watson], pp. 57-58, 17 Nov., 1839)

“President Young preached in the House of the Lord in the forenoon, and John Taylor in the afternoon.  In the evening, President Brigham Young anointed Elder John Taylor in the House of the Lord, and Elder Daniel S. Miles anointed Theodore Turley, all of which was sealed with the shout of Hosanna.”  (HC 4:21)
