The lecture was delivered on October 19, 2024, by UVA’s Richard Lyman Bushman Chair of Mormon Studies Laurie Maffly-Kipp. She presented her firsthand research on Mormonism in Africa and reflected on the broader state of global Mormonism. Each fall, the Mormon Studies Program sponsors the public Joseph Smith Lecture on religion in public life, with particular emphasis on religious liberty and civic leadership.
