4th Annual Joseph Smith Lecture by Douglas Laycock

Robert E. Scott Distinguished Professor of Law and Professor of Religious Studies Douglas Laycock delivered the 2018 Joseph Smith Lecture on Religious Liberty on September 28th. His lecture was entitled “What the Supreme Court Did in Masterpiece Cakeshop.”

Douglas Laycock is a distinguished professor of law at the University of Virginia. He is the nation’s leading authority on the law of religious liberty, having successfully argued on behalf of religious liberty claimants in four supreme court cases and authored a successful amicus brief in a fifth. He is known also for his efforts to bring clarity to the political debate over religious accommodation and equal protection claims in the right to marry campaign. His many writings on religious liberty are published in a five-volume collection. Laycock is vice president of the American Law Institute and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This was our fourth annual Joseph Smith Lecture. It was held in Arlington, Virginia, at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business extension.
