Gary J. Bergera, “Identifying the Earliest Mormon Polygamists, 1841-1844,” Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought 38, no. 2 (Fall 2005): 31 -- Sarah Scott, who had married James Mulholland (1810–39) in early 1839, wed Alexander Mullinder/Mullander (born ca. 1810) civilly on October 25, 1843, with Apostle John Taylor performing the ceremony. Mulholland [kf: he probably means Mullinder here] was probably a “front” husband to conceal Sarah’s plural marriage to Smith . . . Scott was sealed to Mulholland for eternity and to Heber Kimball, not Mullinder, for time on February 3, 1846, in the Nauvoo Temple. The record of that ceremony identifies her explicitly as “Sarah Smith,” implying an earlier sealing to Joseph Smith." See Cook at 191 for a quotation from the reference to Sarah Smith in "A Book of Proxy," No 164. Mulholland died 3 Nov 1849. [Plural] marriage sealing for time to Joseph Smith, 1842-1843. Cook claims at page 191 that she "was sealed for time and eternity to James Mulhooland (then deceased) when she was sealed for time to JS Jr 1842-1843." He gives no reference. He says also she "was sealed for a teim to JSJr and is thus referred to in this record [A Book of Proxy], as "Sarah Smith." Civil marriage to Alexander Mullinder, 25 Oct 1843 (Cook) From family history: Sarah Scott was a Canadian convert, hence John Taylor's involvement in the sealing and marriage rites. Also note that William Law baptized all but Sarah and her mother who were slower to accept. In February Sarah Scott had married Joseph Smith’s secretary, James Mulholland, and by the end of the April 1839 Sarah and James, along with John and his young family, began the trek across Missouri to Illinois, leaving their parents and siblings behind. On April 26, 1839, a council of church leaders met and excommunicated the Scotts who adhered to Russell’s teachings." They reconcile themselves enough to come to Nauvoo but are dismayed by JS teachings. Mulholland dies. In October 1843, "Sarah Scott Mulholland took as her second husband Alexander Mulliner, a family friend of Scotch descent." http://www.scottcorner.org/JACOB%20&%20SARAH%20SCOTT.pdf On File "BA-TYPS has Sarah Kimball Mulholland. BA-TYPS does not indicated that she was anointed to her deceased husband, James Mulholland, to whom she had been sealed for eternity; if so, she would have been anointed to Mulholland for eternity and to Heber Chase Kimball for time.
