337. May have received his endowment by proxy in the Nauvoo temple. Heber C. Kimball's diary for 11 Dec 1845 records: "the following were taken through all the ordinance & ceremony viz. … mother Lucy (Mack) Smith and John Smith with her as proxy [for Joseph Smith, Sr.]" (Anderson/Bergera-EC, bracketed text added). However, the entry is vague, and may mean that John Smith was not endowed for Joseph Smith, Sr., but simply took Lucy Mack Smith through the veil, acting as proxy for her deceased husband. Still, in other cases where men took widows through the veil, they were not referred to as proxies. Even if John Smith acted as proxy for Joseph Smith Sr.'s endowment, it was not considered an actual vicarious ordinance, because the official endowment records, used to compile NTER, did not include it.
